We done, we bad, we gone

It's been a very long day.

The Venturers were catering the District Clergy & Spouses Christmas Party tonight. I started cooking this morning by 9:30 or 10:00 o'clock. The Venturers got a few things done yesterday, but the whole weekend has been very crowded, so we weren't as ready as I'd hoped. Hence, the early start.

Deanne joined me about 11:30. We worked steadily on into the afternoon. Venturers began arriving from school, just before 3:00. Guests started drifting in around 5:00 for a 5:30 start. We had wassail and a cheeseball ready for them. The whole dinner was ready right on time.

My friend Curt said that the main topic of conversation was the food, which I took for a very good sign. We really hit this one out of the park. After the dinner, the youth cleaned up while the program went on. And on. And on. It's an occupational hazard of clergy gatherings that lots of people have to be asked/want to be asked to say "just a few words." The word count rarely lives up to the descriptor "few," I'm afraid.

Anyway, they got done and we finished cleaning up. I let the youth go about 9:00. I got home by 9:30, after a twelve-hour day of cooking and cleaning. Now, I'm sitting here being "vewy, vewy quiet."

Some hae meat and canna eat,
And some wad eat that want it;
But we hae meat, and we can eat,
Sae let the Lord be thankit.
