R.I.P.

Oral Roberts's death yesterday caused barely a ripple in the news.

I remember my father watching his TV show when I was a boy. I remember my surprise when he became a United Methodist. Of course, I remember his famous "or God will call me home" appeal when he was trying to raise money to save his City of Faith hospital. And I remember several jokes -- good-natured ones mostly, poking fun at Oral's image as a miracle-worker.
This just in: Oral Roberts was a victim of a hit-and-run accident today. Witnesses say he was out walking his duck when he was run over by a speeding motorboat.

Do you know why Oral Roberts's hospital keeps losing money? Because every time he walks his dog past the hospital and says, "Heal!" [sic] all the paying customers get up and walk out.

Still, he was a good man who loved Jesus. And that's the way I'll remember him.
