A good day

I had a WONderful day yesterday. I got out the door before 10:30 in the morning. I felt so free -- giddy even -- as I drove out of town in the rain. After two weeks of deadlines and grinding stuff out, I was off on the road to Wilderstead.

Actually, I went straight to Rising Sun first. That's the capital of Ohio County. There'd been a hassle on our property taxes that I wanted to straighten out in person. But then it was on to the holler.

I did a few piddly chores: put up a clothes bar upstairs in the cabin, f'instance. But mostly I just wandered about. Rain spattered down for a while, and then the day turned warm and bright. I just can't describe how much I love to just be there. I was at peace, contented.

I saw a fair amount of downed timber and brush that I need to take a chainsaw to when it dries out a bit. The creek that I had reshaped last summer was doing a fine job of draining the water. I set out some iron standards on the future building site and got out my string level to determine the actual fall of the land in order to make my final drawings for our retirement home. From the high corner to the low corner, the building site falls 66 inches and change. This makes designing the undercroft much easier.

We're not going to have a true basement (never again). But the lower third of the cottage will be built over an undercroft where the composting toilet will live. The upper two thirds of the cottage will rest on concrete piers set in the ground.

There are some pix below the cut. After several years of photographing Wilderstead, all the subjects look pretty much the same: woods, stream, cabin . . . So I try to capture things in a new light or a new mood. Anyway, here are a few looks at my Earthly Paradise on a nice day that showed hints of spring.

I left the holler about 5:00 p.m. Ate supper in Seymour and attended a Council Camporee committee meeting. Got home around 10:30 p.m. All in all, a very good day.
