Speed-shifting

I have been juggling two things of very different emotional weight this week. I had a parishioner dying of cancer; the onset was very fast, and he went downhill even faster. And we've had Vacation Bible School going on, with lots of fun and hooplah.

This afternoon, I went to the visitation at the funeral home. Tonight, I'll go romp with the kids again, then write the funeral in the quiet after. Tomorrow, I go straight from the funeral dinner after the committal to a kids' pool party.

If anyone wants to understand what pastoral ministry is like, this is it. One has to learn to switch emotional gears without a clutch on some days, without bringing inappropriate gloom or grins to whatever occasion one is attending.
