I can sympathize with the man, but it's too late for that. Britt Hume pointed out on Fox News Sunday that the first rule of handling scandal -- of any sort -- is to do whatever it takes to MAKE IT STOP. Sometimes, that means you have to resign -- with or without your dignity. Craig finally made it stop by quitting; now he wants to start it all up again.
This is no longer about what happened in that airport restroom. It's about the tides of politics. Craig's ship hit a sandbar; meanwhile, the tides have gone out. He is beached. Should he attempt to refloat his career, the gash in his hull will sink him. Any of his Republican colleagues who attempt to help him will go down with him. So the only question is how long it will take him -- and what damage he will do to everyone else -- before he realizes that there's no going back from where he's gone.
Someone who cares about him should tell him he's just making things worse for himself, his party, and all the causes he says he cares about.
