Philology experiment

We were walking up the hill from Murphy's pub (where we had lunch) to the Marriott (where the meetings were to be held) in D.C. last Friday, and I was feeling Irish. But I'd had a pint and a half of Bass, and had been spouting stray bits of German as a result.

I thought of a Barry Fitzgerald-type priest saying, "Sure, and in me Father's house are many mansions," but tried to say it in German -- with an Irish accent. By the time I got to the end of the sentence, I had switched to Old English (no fooling).

I had always described the sound of Old English as that of someone speaking Swedish with a Southern drawl, but now I'm thinking that someone speaking German in an Irish brogue will get you there just as efficiently.
