Sappy observation of the night

If you're going to do this job (pastoral ministry), you must be prepared to have your heart broken. Like it says in "The Rose,"
It's the heart afraid of breaking that never learns to dance,
and it's the dream afraid of waking that never takes the chance.
It's the one who won't be taken who cannot seem to give,
and the soul afraid of dying that never learns to live.

Lots of clergy think they can fake it.
Lots of clergy get beat up from the job and start protecting themselves.
Lots of clergy think they can move people around like counters, while remaining uninvolved with them.

But if you're going to rescue souls from hell, you can't do that.
If you're going to help people touch heaven, you have to be REAL.
And speak TRUTH -- all the time.
And drop your defenses.

It's so hard.
Sometimes, I hate it.
But I wouldn't live any other way.
