General Confusion on line two, Mr. Secretary

An awful lot of retired general officers are calling for Donald Rumsfeld's ouster, which is something new in the US Armed Forces. Is Rumsfeld really arrogant? (Yes.) Is he incompetent? (No.) Is he helping or hurting our goals in Iraq/President Bush/whatever? (Only time will tell.)

All I really know is that Rumsfeld came into the Pentagon to change the way the place works, and that is not going to make you a lot of friends among the Generals and Admirals who work there. And I know another leader who did the same, in his day and with his general staff. That leader's name was Winston Churchill. When Generals grumbled that he promoted people for -- gasp! -- MERIT (as opposed to seniority), he responded, "The Army is not a club." And when Admirals griped that he ignored naval tradition, he snapped, "Shall I tell you what naval tradition is: rum, sodomy, and the lash. Good morning, gentlemen."

This is not to suggest that Rummy is a Winny, or even in his league, but if ya get that many brasshats that mad, ya can't be all bad!
