My kind of place
I have a scythe-like tool out in the holler that I use to clear high weeds and such with. I have since learned that it's called a grass hook. Anyway, I've been looking for over a year for a new one, since my old one has gotten all bent up where the blade joins the handle. No luck anywhere. I've searched farm and garden supply places (e.g., Orscheln, Tractor Supply), hardware stores (e.g., True Value), home builder stores (e.g., Lowe's, Menard's) and big box stores (e.g., Walmart). No such luck. I've even searched online and found nothing.

Today, on a whim, I decided to go to Kleindorfer's, an old-time hardware store on the south side of Bloomington. This is the kind of place where you go looking for the odd bolt -- you know, the one that only breaks every twenty years, so nobody stocks them. You go in, and some good old boy asks you what you're looking for, and you show him the remnants of your old bolt, and he goes and rummages in a bin and pulls out six of them, in stock. That kind of hardware store.

And there, sitting on a shelf, were three or four grass hooks, just like I've been looking for. They were in the section with snaths (= scythe handles) and brush hooks and other medieval-looking implements of lawn and garden care. Bingo! Kleindorfer's, I love you.
