Time Event
It takes all kinds
We covered Cultural Diversity today at Crew meeting. The Venturers are evolving successfully, I'm happy to say.

When I do presentations on Cultural Diversity, I avoid dealing with political correctness or emphasizing victim groups. To get a sense of all the different kinds of people that rub up against each other in America requires a historical perspective. Native Americans are not just generic Indians, and Europeans are not just generic White people, etc. I give full emphasis to Religion, both those religions brought here by others and those developed here in the course of our history. From ethnicity/national origin and religion we go on to sex, socio-economic status, dialect, regional heritage, yada yada yada.

One of our Venturers was born in China and came here as a three-year-old. She talks like a country girl, but she's really into pandas. I taught them about the Cane Ridge camp meeting, which none of them knew about -- but which was formative to the religious traditions of several of them. Likewise, learning about the Scotch-Irish interested them -- another important part of our history neglected in school. We even wound up detouring past Santeria and Vodun.

Everyone wants to come to America. Every kind of group is here. Ours is a very rich heritage.
