Back from the chop shop

Surgery went fine. As long as my left arm is propped up with pillows, I feel OK, though pretty wiped out. The doctor removed three bone spurs in my left shoulder. I should be pretty functional in a couple of days. Taking it easy for now. Thank you for all the prayers.

At the close of the halftime show on Monday Night Football this evening, Chris Berman told his co-host that tomorrow begins the Twelve Days of Christmas. I was stunned. I thought I'd seen every sort of ignorance there was.

To be clear: there are probably lots of people who don't know what the Twelve Days of Christmas are, and that's fine. But how many confidently assume they are the twelve days leading up to Christmas, instead of the twelve days in the liturgical season of Christmastide that runs between December 25 (Christmas Day) and January 6 (Epiphany)? And will confidently say so in front of a national TV audience?

Nor is this just being picky. This is a matter of millions of people's religious practice. I sent an e-mail to the ESPN Ombudsman complaining about it. For what good it'll do.
