Form impedes function
I live in a big, old house of many rooms. That means many doors, doorways, and high traffic areas through the house. Which means that if one person is bustling around trying to get something done, there is sure to be somebody else standing in the way of where the first person wants to go.
I'm an impatient guy, I suppose, but still. After a while, patience just means that you have to keep asking people politely
to move out of the way. I'd prefer a house where the traffic patterns were such that people didn't have to clog the choke points, and so didn't have to be asked to move all the time.
All of which tells you why I'm designing my retirement cottage on an open plan as much as possible. I'm tired of living in Chinese puzzle boxes.
