Got up early and got cookin' this morning. It was my turn to cook for the Wednesday Bible study group. I had said I would make a Saarländer Eintopf
-- a German one-pot dish of pork and kraut.
It starts with a mess of butter, a big glob of olive oil, and most of a pound of bacon. Then go in green onions, garlic, mushrooms, (rinsed) sauerkraut, and some spices -- peppercorns, caraway seeds, juniper berries, a couple of bay leaves. Add in ham chunks, then seasoned spareribs, and finally a couple of varieties of sausage.
I knew I'd have to make a larger than normal pot, so I was merrily throwing things in my 12 inch Dutch oven, when I realized that I had a problem. I still had the sausages to go, and I couldn't close the lid. My large pot wasn't large enough. So I went out to the garage and got a 20-quart Dutch oven
-- that was big enough!
After lunch and Bible study, I did a bunch of work in my study. Then, at 5:00 p.m., I had to hustle over the church and let in Venturers to continue to work on their lapquilts. We worked steadily till past 7:00, when I had to go up and catch the last of choir practice.
