Hwaet!
We learn something new all the time, eh?

I only recently learned that Alcuin of York's name isn't pronounced "Al-kyew-in." Nor even "Al-koo-in." Alcuin is a shortened form of the Latin Alcuinus, which was an attempt to express his actual Old English name in the medieval Latin spoken and written by monks. His real name was Ealhwine (the medial h is sounded like the ch in loch). The closest modern English would come would be "Alk-win" (but drawl the first syllable as they would in the South).

Color me embarrassed.
