Ich suche ein stilles Oertchen

As one of the few people, clergy or lay, to have built an outhouse as a missions project, I tell people that I am a Privy Councilor in the Kingdom of God. But our Venture Crew also collects pictures of privies wherever we go. Here are a couple from our trips.

Coming down off of Tooth Ridge has got to be one of the longest days one will ever spend backpacking.

Our favorite place to stop on the way back, first night. AND, they've got dino tracks!

I can feel my blood stirring

Tired as I am, posting trek photos as I update my galleries and receiving comments from fellow backpackers makes me eager to hit the trail. Here is one of my favorite German trail songs (it's amazing how the Germans, whose national sport is Walking/hiking, can capture just the right mood).

(Incidentally, when I sang this for my friend Curt, he pointed out that the tune was co-opted and re-worked for an old hymn beginning, "How tedious and tasteless the hours when Jesus no longer I see.")
Auf, auf zum fröhlichen Jagen!
Auf, auf ins freie Feld!
Es fängt schon an zu tagen,
das Weidwerk mir gefällt.
Auf, bei den frohen Stunden,
mein Herz, ermuntre dich!
Die Nacht ist schon verschwunden,
und Phöbus zeiget sich.

Schau, wie das Heer der Sterne
den schönen Glanz verliert
und wie sie sich entfernen,
wenn sich Aurora rührt!
Die Vögel in den Wäldern
sind schon vom Schlaf erwacht
und haben auf den Feldern
ihr Morgenlied gebracht.

Das edle Jägerleben
vergnüget meine Brust,
dem Wilde nachzustreben
ist meine höchste Lust.
Wo Reh und Hirsche springen,
wo Rohr und Büchse knallt,
wo Jägerhörner klingen,
da ist mein Aufenthalt.
