Mission Trip progress

Well, all four Venturers -- two adults and two youth -- are now on board, and tickets to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, have been purchased. Tickets between Dar and Kigoma are next up, and will be finalized this week. collinsmom applied for her passport today.

The tentative itinerary goes as follows.
Wednesday, June 7: Fly out of Indianapolis 5:25 p.m. to Chicago;
Three and a half hour layover, then depart Chicago for London.

Thursday, June 8: Arrive London 11:00 a.m.;
long layover -- maybe time to go out and do lunch in London somewhere;
depart London 7:20 p.m.

Friday, June 9: Arrive Dar 7:00 a.m.;
Depart Dar c. 1:00 p.m.;
Arrive Kigoma on Lake Tanganyika c. 5:30 p.m.

While in Kigoma, we will be staying at Joy in the Harvest, an ecumenical mission supporting the Church in Tanzania. They do church construction, pastoral training, evangelism work, feeding programs, helping the poor, summer recreation programs, AIDS prevention programs, refugee work, etc. etc. The Director is a UM minister. Nikki and Amber will do hands-on mission work under his direction. Deanne and I will help out as needed, or just talk church politics and gripe about our grown kids with Lowell and Claudia. We may go boating on Lake Tanganyika -- certainly we will go swimming there! And Lowell has connections with the UN refugee camps on the Burundi border, and may be able to get us in there.

Thursday, June 15: Leave Kigoma c. 4:30 p.m.;
Arrive Dar c. 9:00 p.m.

Friday, June 16: Take bus to Morogoro, meet up with Pastor Umba, the DS of Morogoro.

Saturday, June 17: Fun stuff. Perhaps a game drive at Mikumi National Park? Or hiking in the Udzungwa Mountains? Or maybe the Uluguru Mountains right outside the city? Anyway, some high adventure.

Sunday, June 18: Go to church (takes all morning, but it's worth it. Tour all the many projects Umba's got going in Morogoro.

Monday, June 19: Go shopping on the street. Hop the bus back to Dar.

Tuesday, June 20: Leave Dar 8:55 a.m.;
Arrive London 4:55 p.m.;
Take the tube down to the Thames, eat out, take a quickie tour of something in the long evening light, stay out and howl till it's time to return to Heathrow. (We can sleep on the plane home!)

Wednesday, June 21: Leave London 9:35 a.m.;
Fly to Chicago, brief layover, hop a flight to Indy, arriving at 4:41 p.m.;
Drive home!
