A good day

Long day at Wilderstead. Left in the dark, got home in the dark. On the other hand, it was a stunningly gorgeous fall day in the woods -- and not much is better than that.

I built the central load-bearing wall that will hold up the loft today. Screwed up both doorways in it and had to redo them -- one of them twice. I thought this was supposed to get easier, but my brain gets all muddled framing doors.

In pursuit of a lofty goal

After the wall resolved itself, I put some more plywood sheathing up on the outside walls. I don't mind schlepping lumber from my truck to the building site, but I balk at carrying whole sheets of plywood. So I got out Ol' Bessie, my little Kubota tractor, and drove them over in style.

As useful as pockets on a t-shirt

After my official work was done, I vacuumed the cabin and did some major straightening-up. I've got some Scouts coming over to do a 20-mile hike next week, and I want the place to look nice. And as I was leaving, I was struck with the beautiful fall colors in my woods. This pic is of the trees along the Pishon (beyond Levi, my truck). Breathing in the air, looking out over the woods, I just want to say, with James Whitcomb Riley, "Ain't God good to Indiana!"

Through the sycamores the water's barely creeping,
