Advent Study

Our new pastor is utterly frazzled and fighting bronchitis for her first Advent and Christmas with Arlington UMC, so she asked me to come up with an Advent study. Anyway, here's what we're doing on Wednesday evenings in Advent; don't know times yet.

Wednesday, December 5
“The Gospel Narratives as Primary Sources”

An in-depth study of the birth of Jesus according to Matthew and Luke, illuminated by other known or inferred data from the period. Intended to show, as nearly as possible, “the way it really happened” – and how we know that.

Wednesday, December 12
“Echoes of Christmas: the Woman and the Dragon in Revelation 12”

A close examination of the portents of the woman and the dragon described by John in the Revelation, and how it relates to our understanding of the birth of Christ.

Wednesday, December 19
“A Study of Christmas Songs and Carols”

A theological and historical overview of the development of Christmas music. With lots of singing. Because.

Each evening’s study will be accompanied by seasonal sips and nibbles.
