Beat up more than upbeat

Periodic exhaustion is a professional hazard for the clergy. We are like professional athletes, and Christmas is like the playoffs. Ya gotta leave it all on the field. The problem is, unlike pro athletes, we don't have an off-season. The Sunday after Christmas is just another workday, and there's all the end-of-year/beginning-of-year paper to be pushed. Also, unlike pro athletes, we compete in three or four "seasons" a year, with exhaustion points following Christmas, Easter, big summer youth trips (for some of us), and (to some extent) Charge Conference.

Tired people are stupid people. This is a home truth I have learned through long and bitter experience. Tired people are more accident-prone, they say dumb things, they get in arguments, they miss details. I try to schedule some time off following the heavy times, but I still get trapped into trying to play tired.

So Sunday evening, I whacked a light pole. Last night, I whacked a friend (so to speak), trying to be humorous and encouraging in his time of pain; the attempt was so bad that I woke up at 4:00 a.m. and thought, Egad! What have I said?! So, apologies have been sent, and I'll have to deal with the aftermath of that bit of dumbth even as I deal with the aftermath of hitting the light pole.

I'd like to lock myself up in a rubber room until I stop bouncing, but there's still stuff to be done, so I gotta get a few things accomplished. There are sick people in the hospital, worship services to plan, errands to be run.

No rest for the weary.
