A golden autumn day

I don't know when I last passed such a wonderful day on a campout.

I was certainly stressed enough on my way out to the camporee this morning. But as soon as I got there, things began to relax. My task -- running an orienteering course -- was comparatively easy. I had no Scouts or Venturers of my own to be responsible for. The day was beautiful. The company was congenial.

There were five of us to while away the afternoon, once the day's program was over. John, our DE, was cooking for us. He was good company. Ed, one of our new Commissioners, was easy to be with. Lloyd is a friend and parishioner and we were comfortable with each other. Then, what cane I say? Tony I have known for over forty years. We were on camp staff at old Wapehani back in the Jurassic sometime, and we were both Indian dancers together. We sat around, the five of us, engaging in good, honest, masculine conversation.

Supper was wonderful -- pork chops and fried potatoes. Dark fell. We presented awards to the Scouts who had won various contests. And the five of us on staff were the judges for a truly amazing Dutch oven dessert competition. Wow. After that, we sat around the fire in the dark and sipped coffee and watched the stars.

It was a magical day, and it did me a world of good.
