Gelobet seist du jeder Zeit, Frau Musica

I downloaded some pretty groovy music publishing software this week, and with it tackled an old project. Back in 1986 (Egad, has it been that long?), I wrote a choral setting for Psalm 24. It was the first time I had ever tried to write an accompaniment that didn't just double the voices. The problem was, I didn't have a good enough music writing program to hear the playback. I tried fixing some of its problems a few years later, but then it lay on a shelf.

I think I've got what few dissonances remained worked out, but editing a manuscript from nearly thirty years ago is really mind-boggling. My mind doesn't work the same way it did, nor are my fingers as flexible and well-rehearsed as they once were. For one thing, if I were writing it today, I wouldn't put in all the Italianate performance directions: Amabile, Deciso, Marziale, and the rest. For another thing, I would have chosen either 2/4 or 2/2 for the duple meter sections, not both. (The work starts out in duple meter, then broadens into a 4/4 march.) I also would have made the accompaniment, well, easier to play.

The work has never been performed, and may never be. But if I can get it polished up a bit, it'll make me happy. Still, it raises the question, what happened to my musical impulses? I wrote a fair bit of music back in the '80s and '90s. Maybe I've worked out what little inspiration I had. But it's not just music. I seem to have so little time to be creative any more.
