Time to take your medicine

I can't say that I'm thrilled that the GOP primary race looks like it's come down to Mitt Romney or Newt Gingrich. Neither would have been my first choice for President, even if guaranteed election; when you consider that these two candidates have to face the Obama über-funded smear machine, then both election and governance are equally chancy affairs.

But, we got what we got. I'm thinking that the best of both worlds would be for Romney to top the ticket with Newt running as Veep. The top of the ticket is usually assigned the job of looking presidential, and Romney keeps up appearances well. The running mate is usually assigned the job of hatchet-man, and Newt would wipe the floor with Joe Biden or anybody else the Dems can put up in that slot, with time left over to beat Obama like a drum. Assuming election, Romney would then conduct himself with gravitas, while Newt would raise bazillions of dollars and spout purple rhetoric.

If Newt behaves himself, some of his ideas might be real keepers. If he makes a fool of himself, he can be written off as court jester. And so long as Romney has a Republican Congress, he should do okay and not give the farm away.

You know, it just might work.
